New Found Love | {Life Continues on…}

Lesson three for this amazing course I am taking, that inspires, encourages and pushes us to do our best when photographing people. I must say that for this week’s lesson, I was thinking I would have to do it in the make-up week since I would be on vacation, visiting my mom in California. Time would be busy, some shopping, a visit to a winery, hiking with a friend, walking on the beach and of course, spending time with my  mom would keep me on the go. As I sat one night at dinner with my mom, Sis, and her “friend” I was talking about how wonderful this course has been and how much I’ve learned from this…and that I’d have to skip this week’s lesson. My mom asked me why and who or what I was suppose to photograph…I told her either a couple or children. Much to my surprise…she offered for the two of them to be my “subjects!”  Pleased and excited, I had two days to do a bit of research on photographing senior citizens…that was helpful and I found some ideas for poses, which I felt might work. I knew the location would be the back yard of the house my mom was renting in the retirement community…I didn’t want to push my luck and take them somewhere they would feel anymore uncomfortable than I felt they would already feel. Also, I knew it would be limited…time, that is, and needed to move them quickly through the session, so needed to be efficient!

A bit of history…just over four years ago my dad passed away, he and my mom had been married for 48 years and had been incredible role models for us kids as to what a happy and healthy marriage is all about. Losing a loved one is incredibly difficult, but my mom is extremely strong and has kept busy and enjoyed life in the past few years…although I knew she missed having a companion. She winters in Southern California every year (she lives in Spokane, Washington the rest of the year)…and last year she met someone who caught her eye and the two of them found they enjoyed spending time together. Her friend (my mom’s term, not mine!!), Philip, had recently lost his wife to a terrible illness and seemed to enjoy my mom’s company, as well. Fast forward a year…they are still enjoying time together, traveling some, golfing, sharing meals, going to movies, walks and even beating my husband and I at Words with Friends (they are tough competition!)…and are so darn cute together. Once can see the spark they have for each other and it’s great to see that even after a wonderful marriage, life does go on and you can find someone to share your time with again. I’m very happy for both of them and know that their loved ones who are no longer here, would be happy to see them happy!

One thing I found to be a great way to help them (mostly Philip) relax was to ask them what each of them saw in the other when they met a year ago. It took their focus away from myself and the camera…to the other one and they each seemed to relax. Hearing their thoughts and the wonderful qualities that brought them together…it was heartwarming and so nice to know that my mom has found someone to share her life with, who cares about her and enjoys being with her. It’s a blessing to find the “love of your life” and when you lose that love, to find another to share life with is truly an extra blessing!

San Diego Wedding…Jones ~ Wheeler

Back home again and it’s great to be back, I sure missed home, my husband, our dog and of course, my granddaughter! California was wonderful…not quite as warm as I would have hoped for, but you won’t hear me complaining, I still enjoyed my time there and especially having the opportunity to meet and get to know Kamie and John. The family session (previous post) was perfect to get acquainted before the wedding, even if the weather wasn’t quite what we would have wanted.
The wedding was beautiful and I don’t think they could have had a better day that week…the weather was ideal…comfortable temperature, no wind, no fog and best of all, no rain…just about perfect! Of course, it wouldn’t have mattered to John and Kamie what the weather was, because at the end of the day they became “Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler!”
I was honored to be asked to photography their special day and it was my pleasure to meet their family and friends…who were all so kind and a pleasure to visit with. I must say that a couple of people stand out from that evening…Cash, who was the ring bearer…he was a character…such personality and I was impressed that at his young age, he didn’t think twice about walking down the aisle…he was great! Another individual would be Cash’s mom, Brandi, who was VERY pregnant (and had been in the hospital with contractions the day before!)…and she did it all and on the dance floor, WOW…I give her the award for the most time on the dance floor!! Kamie sent me a note today and said that Brandi is still waiting for the newest family member to arrive…but that it will be any day…I must say, I truly expected her to deliver that night after all she did that day! Brandi gave a very touching speech/toast to Kamie and John…it is obvious that they have been great friends and have been there for each other through thick and thin! And, the best man, Dan, also gave a heartfelt toast and wished both Kamie and John the best for years to come.
Here’s a sample of some of the events that wonderful evening at Tom Hams Lighthouse on Shelter Island in San Diego…great couple, family, friends and beautiful location…
CONGRATULATIONS JOHN and KAMIE

I also would like to thank my brother, Scott Hege, for being such a great assistant…I couldn’t have done half the job without him! It was the first wedding he’d “worked” at and although he said it was a bit nerve wracking at times, he said it was a blast and he also enjoyed meeting everyone!

Ahhh…a beach session ~ San Diego, CA

Greetings from sunny southern California! It’s been really nice since I’ve arrived and even the cooler (and one wet) days are still wonderful! I do love the sunshine and am crossing my fingers that by the time I arrive back home, there’s more sun and warmer temperatures!
It’s been a fun visit so far…time with my mom, my sisters and brother were here over the weekend and we had a great time together…family is so important and I’m glad we made the time to spend together. My brother and I will drive back with my mom to her home in Spokane at the end of the week.
So, a little work thrown in with some vacation time…and that’s just a perfect mix! Sunday afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting Kamie and John, whose wedding I’ll be photographing this coming Saturday. Kamie’s family joined us and we had a fun family session…despite a bit of wind and cooler than it had been, but still great. My brother joined me…as he’ll be my assistant at the wedding and it was a fun way to get acquainted with Kamie, John and her family…all wonderful people and I look forward to Saturday and sharing in their big day!
Here are some shots from that afternoon…
RIGHT after this shot, the water rushed up, and they all had to quickly scramble to get out of the way…we thought we were in a “safe zone” but the surf had other ideas!!
The girls…Kamie, Christy, Kara and Halee…
Dad and Mom…Dennis and Jodi…with the crew all behind them…goofing around!
Josh, the only boy with three sisters…and his wife Christy
The guys…John, Dennis and Josh…they were all so serious…come on guys you have to lighten up and give me some smiles for the wedding this weekend!! :~)
John and Kamie…a walk on the beach…soon, they’ll be “Mr. and Mrs.” and walking off into wedded bliss!
Thank you, Kamie and John for asking me to share in such a special time in your lives! I look forward to Saturday…I’ll see you then!
